The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has been formed by Order dated 9th May, 2002 passed by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India in IA No. 292 in Writ Petition No. 202/1995 titled T.N. Godavarman Thirumalpad Vs Union of India and Ors.
The CEC was, in terms of this Order of the Hon'ble Supreme Court, constituted at the national level, for monitoring of implementation of the Hon'ble Court's orders and to place the non-compliance cases before it.
Its responsibilities include overseeing encroachment removals, implementation of working plans, compensatory afforestation, plantations and other conservation issues. The CEC was reconstituted on December 8, 2023.
